CONCERTS > TEATRO VILLAMARTA

TEATRO VILLAMARTA, Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz)
October 23rd, 2023 at 8:00 pm

On Friday, October 13th, the Teatro Villamarta (Pl. Romero Martínez, 20) at Jerez hosted a charity concert around the tradition of Spanish music for classical guitar and string quartet, with two special guests that delighted us with their dance on stage.

It was the first great concert in a renowned theater in the province of Cádiz, the land of Maestro Ángel G. Piñero.

We listened to the Spanish guitar as a solo instrument with the Italian Luca Romanelli as well as in an exciting instrumental dialogue with the Álvarez Beigbeder Orchestra string quartet from Jerez de la Frontera: Violin I: Collette Babiaud; Violin II: Salvador Molina; Viola: Gloria Ruiz; Cello: Cristóbal González Babiaud. Manuel Garrido and Alycia Hiddinga (dancers from the Paris Opera ballet) performed two works on stage.

A good charitable cause: the Association “A cry for hope. FOP.” The Ángel G. Piñero Classical Guitar Association, promoter of the concert, donated a part of the box office proceeds to support the clinical trials that are being developed for research into Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), a rare bone disease that Valentina, a girl from Jerez who is only three years old, suffers from.

THE VENUE

TEATRO VILLAMARTA

The concert will take place at the magnificent Villamarta Theater in Jerez de la Frontera.

The Villamarta Theater is a theater designed in the Andalusian regionalist style by Teodoro Anasagasti, built in 1926. In 1988 it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).

On February 11, 1928, the theater was inaugurated with 2,000 seats. In the inaugural show, two zarzuelas were presented: La viejecita and El huésped del sevillano by the company of zarzuelas and operettas led by Eugenia Zuffoli. A short time later, silent films began to be shown. For a long time the Riba family was in charge of managing the theater, taking it to levels never seen in the province with a team of stars that filled the theater.

In June 1986, the theater was closed and in 1988 it was bought by the Jerez City Council. In 1994, the theater reform works began. Among the most important modifications are the reduction of seats to 1,200 and the elimination of some masonry columns present in the middle of the stalls due to the impression that the vision of such a large amphitheater without any support caused when it was built. On November 21, 1996, it was reopened with a recital by Alfredo Kraus accompanied by the Thuringian Philharmonic Orchestra, managed by the Fundación Teatro Villamarta.

The Theater hosts two important events with international projection: the Festival de Jerez and the Centro Lírico del Sur. The latter, in collaboration with other Andalusian foundations, performs zarzuelas and operas in its own production.

It owes its name to the famous composer from Jerez D. Germán Álvarez Beigbeder.

Since then, it has worked in a stable and continuous way, giving young Andalusian musicians the opportunity to train and participate in multiple classical music events inside and outside our country.
